Converting a raw image to vmdk and loading on Virtual Box

Here we are converting sample disk images into a virtual machine disk (vdi) format. We are going to use Virtual Box to load a sample raw disk that we have converted.

Steps to convert the raw disk:

  • Install Virtual Box (https://www.virtualbox.org/)
  • Download a sample disk form any of the open source forensics sites
  • Use the following command and convert the raw disk to the .vdi format
  • Traverse to the virtualbox folder and run the command
  • vboxmanage convertfromraw C:\raw.dd C:\raw1.vdi
  • Now open Virtual Box and replace the bootable disk and turn on the virtual machine.

Attached is the dd image and the VM. Using the instructions and commands within the presentation and the video, try converting the dd image to the VM.
